Blog 10- Funding non-profits

ARGUMENT: The central argument is nonprofits and social justice. Nonprofits are the seventh largest economy in the world. Most acquire funding from the government but in order to receive funding they must be registered as a 501(c) (3). This allows access to money.

How can nonprofits serve the community when there is no funding from the government. When this happens, nonprofits can turn to fondations to get donations, if their philosophy fits, one can ask for income to support their nonprofit. The problem is though, sometimes foundations philosophy and nonprofits philosophy do not always fit together smoothly and then the nonprofit will change their mission to fit the requirements to get money so they can continue to serve the community. This becomes an issue as now the nonprofit no longer serves the communities needs as their mission statement has changed. The nonprofit is now a new organization with a new mission although this was not its original purpose, this happened in order for them to stay open. This would only be positive if the new mission fit the needs of the organizations population. Most likely it doesn't and the organization will have to find a new population to fit their new mission

We can receive grants in order to buy new materials for the children. BUT, there is also income from the parents as they are paying around 300 dollars a week for their child to attend our center. Because they are paying a good amount of money. Concoder that many parents have two children at the center, that's 2,400 a month, some have more than two children at the center. Anyways, because they are providing so much income the parents get a say in their children's day. For example, one child has a pillow because they snore while they are taking a nap, it help with their breathing, BUT DCYF states no children can have a pillow, only a blanket at nap. if DCYF came in we would get cited for that pillow, so now the parent brings in an extra blanket to use as a pillow for their safety. technically, DCYF can now not cite us for that pillow. We also have a room ratio of 12. Right now there are 20 children in our room. Again, the parents are paying for their child to be here, so the director is not going to tell a parent their child can no longer attend the center. Because their are two infant rooms, this have to be okay in order to not turn babies away that have been attending since birth. Overall, accommodations must be provided in order to keep the parents, who are providing money weekly, happy and to keep the children attending the center.

You've Got Mail!

WHAT is in Common?: All the organizations speak on the year ending and how 2018 is going to be a better year. They all mention one way of doing that is by your help! They also mention so examples of what happened in 2017 to make it such a good yeah, like the changes they made.

BIG differences: Downcity: mostly pictures!!!! Match: (only the first page loads) but I believe this one is supposed to make you feel sorrow and want to help the children as they look like they need a place to stay and some food. united: very wordy but makes it easy to donate by giving clickable buttons. Youth: focuses on their birthday! and they used one picture with short burst of text.

TOOLS to make me give my money: pictures so I can see the work being done. They address the reader by name which makes it feel personal as though the letter is for your eyes only and you are meant to make the difference. The easy donate buttons draw you in on united as a busy person, a one click option is something I would need. YIA plays on their 20th birthday by asking donors to donate 20 dollars every month or to increase donations 20%. repetition to stick in your head. Downcity focuses on using pictures with very little text. Then they ask for an end of the year donation.

WHO gets my $50.00???: At first I was going to give my money to Downcity because I loved looking at the pictures and seeing the work that was done but then I thought about it, and realised their was not enough information about their plan or what their work was for me to donate, of course I could research more (which I am going to do) but solely based on the flyer I would not give them my money but instead United We Dream as they have a good mix of text and pictures (logo and donation buttons to break up text). Honestly, I think it is the donation buttons that sold me as I am on the go and a button I can just click that will send me to the right documentation to donate 50 dollars in 2 minutes is the kind of webpage we need in our life.

MY TAKE ON HSLI!

HASBRO SUMMER LEARNING INITIATIVE
What is HSLI?: Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative!!! It is keeping learning flowing through the summer. Started in MA and in 2012 moved to Rhode Island and partnered with United Way. ALC also supports.

Image result for hasbro summer learning initiativeThe Problem: Children sleeping in and relaxing in the summer and not learning as much as they would when it is the academic school year.

YDEV anchors/ ideologies connection: Youth work and promoting children learning for themselves. This program is definitely leading with youth. Children work with groups and they all get a chance to lead groups. This helps to break children out of shells and shape them into tomorrow's leaders. PUrposeful play is a big one as the children are learning through play. There are classes on dancing and movement and the children also go out into the community to help make it better, by planting flowers or cleaning up trash. The big takeaway is building friendships in these types of scenarios.

Who can come?: elementary school, middle school and high school-age populations can  sign up voluntarily and  many attend on  a scholarship while others do pay a tuition.

Who does HSLI work with?: United way and Afterschool Leadership Circle

What is required for a grant?: have then in by nov 9 2015 or you will not be considered for money.  The proposal can not be more than seven pages.  Will be scored on a rubric by UWRI.  In January 2016 results will be revealed.

Plus: I love the initiative to get children involved in the summer. I also love that children can attend on a scholarship as I am sure this allows others to attend that may not. I also enjoy that there is a testing system in place to see if the program is working.

Image result for hasbro summer learning initiativeminus:  The program needs to be bigger and serve more of rhode Island, I had not heard of it before this project.

Delta: This is more of a question.. I am sure there is different test for each grade but i was wondering if there are different test for each school district? I know not all public schools are at the same level and I was wondering how HSLI would accommodate their testing to this.
