MY TAKE ON HSLI!

HASBRO SUMMER LEARNING INITIATIVE
What is HSLI?: Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative!!! It is keeping learning flowing through the summer. Started in MA and in 2012 moved to Rhode Island and partnered with United Way. ALC also supports.

YDEV anchors/ ideologies connection: Youth work and promoting children learning for themselves. This program is definitely leading with youth. Children work with groups and they all get a chance to lead groups. This helps to break children out of shells and shape them into tomorrow's leaders. PUrposeful play is a big one as the children are learning through play. There are classes on dancing and movement and the children also go out into the community to help make it better, by planting flowers or cleaning up trash. The big takeaway is building friendships in these types of scenarios.

Who can come?: elementary school, middle school and high school-age populations can  sign up voluntarily and  many attend on  a scholarship while others do pay a tuition.

Who does HSLI work with?: United way and Afterschool Leadership Circle

What is required for a grant?: have then in by nov 9 2015 or you will not be considered for money.  The proposal can not be more than seven pages.  Will be scored on a rubric by UWRI.  In January 2016 results will be revealed.

Plus: I love the initiative to get children involved in the summer. I also love that children can attend on a scholarship as I am sure this allows others to attend that may not. I also enjoy that there is a testing system in place to see if the program is working.

Delta: This is more of a question.. I am sure there is different test for each grade but i was wondering if there are different test for each school district? I know not all public schools are at the same level and I was wondering how HSLI would accommodate their testing to this.

  1. Thanks for your post and questions Haley. One of the tools HSLI uses in program evaluation is Pre and Post testing. That means that students are tested before they begin the program and after to measure what they have learned (this way they are compared to themselves as opposed to other students who may be in a better/ less well resourced district.
