Director of Expanded Learning!!

Why does this job interest me?:

• I am really into learning and furthering education. I believe by having this job I can have this opportunity by introducing employees to ways they can expand their education and this will help them in the field.  This also allows staff to stay fully educated on today's youth.  Finally this job also allows for the fulfiller to oversee PASA'S high school incentives.  This is what truly draws me to the job. The ability to be with youth and the ability to work with staff on the same level. This way I can see what the youth need and then I can schedule professional development around what the youth stated they needed. 

What could be a challenge?:

• A challenge could be finding professional development that is interesting. I know in the past I have been to trainings that are boring and I can not wait for them to be over. My challenge would be finding trainings that a appropriate for learning about youth and finding trainings that are fun. The other challenge could be time management, which could be managed by making schedules and using planners. Finally I believe I will get everyone's  input by sending out surveys and asking staff and youth what they believe is important. 

What would prepare me for this role?:

• Getting my degree would help to get me ready for this position.  I already have my associates in the arts which correlates to the current Directors.  Soon I will have my BA in Youth Development.  I also have PD in RIELDS and I have attended Lights out Conferences. I believe it will help to keep attending conferences that way I'm educated on current practices.  I have also worked as a toddler teacher for three years and i worked with youth, ages k-5th at the YMCA after school program and I believe this correlates to the current directors coordinators experiences. 

One Question About PASA! 

•  When does PASA have their next Professional Development meeting for the public? If it isn't for the public, how can YDEV students set one up?

• 20 LOCAL VOLUNTEER ARTISTS VOLUNTEERS FROM OCTOBER TO MAY
• 49 ARTIST APPLIED FOR SPOTS BUT THERE WERE ONLY 13 AVALIBLE
• 7 MENTORS RETURNED FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR WHICH MADE UP A 53 PERCENT RETENTION RATE
• 95% ARTS ARE COLLEGE STUDENTS OR GRADUATES

There is room for anyone as population seems to be spread out. There is no greater number of seniors vs. Freshmen. Yes, the number is slightly larger but there is not a huge increase where freshman would not feel welcomed. The only thing that is concerning is there seems to be more of a female population and I would argue on how to get more males involved in the program as Arts and freedom has its home for all and is not a gender specific activity.

Being Silly Reflection ! (Playbox)

Playbox :BEING SILLY

My short story: Why I chose this specific projects of puppets for being silly. I chose puppets because I find that they are very essential to child care. Not only for play but for when you want to talk to children. They help when children have something tough to talk about, the puppet can help lead the conversation or it can be someone relatable for the child. Puppets can also be multicultural, by children being able to express where they come from and what holidays and traditions they celebrate at home. For me, I always feel like puppets are overlooked when their use and need in youth setting are very vital.

My experience Planning: To be honest, this activity took me five minutes to plan. I saw a way I could manipulate the puppet activity to fit two year olds (paper plates and popsicle sticks and crayons) to making it appropriate for college level (the paper bags). It was fun for me to plan because it was a creative activity and it reminded me how important it is to have puppets accessible in my toddler classroom. There was no challenges for me as I lesson plan on a daily based on other topics, the only thing that I could sometimes struggle with is manipulating the ages of the project to make it age appropriate. The only thing to change if leading this activity again is I would have a set playlist of music lined up on the background so we are not flipping though music to find what the class wanted to hear. Although I do believe it is important to get their input. Overall, I am very satisfied with how this project came out and it was very satisfying to see all the different puppets everyone created, which is expression in itself.
