NUA AND THE COMMUNITY AROUND IT
WHO MAKES NEW URBAN ARTS RUN?
- 20 LOCAL VOLUNTEER ARTISTS VOLUNTEERS FROM OCTOBER TO MAY
- 49 ARTIST APPLIED FOR SPOTS BUT THERE WERE ONLY 13 AVALIBLE
- 7 MENTORS RETURNED FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR WHICH MADE UP A 53 PERCENT RETENTION RATE
- 95% ARTS ARE COLLEGE STUDENTS OR GRADUATES
WHO IS THE POPULATION?
- 34% MALE
- 5% OTHER
- 61% FEMALE
37% Hispanic/Latino
27% Multi-racial
12% White/Caucasian
18% African American
6% Asian/Asian American
- 28% Seniors31% Juniors21% Sophomores20% Freshmen
There is room for anyone as population seems to be spread out. There is no greater number of seniors vs. Freshmen. Yes, the number is slightly larger but there is not a huge increase where freshman would not feel welcomed. The only thing that is concerning is there seems to be more of a female population and I would argue on how to get more males involved in the program as Arts and freedom has its home for all and is not a gender specific activity.

- Almost fifty percent of houses have children that of school age, interesting as that plays a role in NUA's program and enrolment. This is definitely a younger community.
,Many houses here are rented and not owned, I again, found this an interesting fact as youth could fear no permanence and maybe NUA plays a part in this too. Being a permanent place to go after school. |

Thanks for your post Haley and for sharing these NUA student stats. I'm curious to know more about what you make of them. What are some inferences you might make about the students based on the demographic data (race/ housing status/ etc)?
